We went back! Yep - we did well the previous year (2001), had a great time, loved Mexico and its people, and had the opportunity to compete again in 2002. Of course we have more photos.
In 2002, we ran in "Historic A" in a 1966 Porsche 912, rather than our beloved 1964 Porsche 356C in Sport Menor again, as it had been converted to a a dedicated track racer and a bit too high-strung for the rigors of La Carrera Panamericana.
The 912 was much more comfortable, and much roomier (in 2001, we couldn't take our helmets off on transits because there was no place to put them - the roll cage prevented us from getting into the former rear-seat area, and there was no room on the floor in front). The 912 engine was in the same level of tune as the 356 engine was in 2001, the suspension was worked over, and the 5-speed transaxle rebuilt with care.
Unfortunately, we ended our event early in Zacatecas (actually,in Aguascaliente). A missed shift took the engine over 9 thousand rpm, and the dowels linking the crank to the flywheel sheared - every single one. That ended our race, and resulted in a long lonely tow into Zacatecas, and a very cramped ride in the Jeep back to Nuevo Laredo.
We hope to return in 2003; the 912's engine is rebuilt, and we'll be doing some shakedown testing in May of 2003, aiming for a stronger finish.
