La Carrera Panamerica 2003

Los Tres Viejos Locos Ride Again!

This year's La Carrera was a big disappointment. The event was great (except for the massive lack of organization around hotel rooms for competitors), the route was great (although some roads were hurricane damaged and very rough), and as usual, the people of La Carrera were great. Our 912 ran strong all summer, but encountered some oil pressure problems just before leaving for Mexico. That may have stressed the engine sufficiently, so that when we lost oil on a nasty stretch of road (flexed the skid plate enough to break the safety wire on the sump drain plug and break the plug, draining all the oil) the bearings were fatally cooked, and our event for 2003 was over. It was a big disappointment, as Brian was driving well (we were climbing in the standings), and Ed arrived in Mexico only after the bearings had failed.

I don't even have any photos worth sharing (well, maybe later). I did take the time to write a brief co-piloto's (navigator's) guide to La Carrera to help out those going to la Carrera for the first time. This guide is also available as a PDF document,
